To-night rain is falling, and the weather promises to be unfavorable for the opening of the A.d.C. meeting to-morrow. For rhe Derby Merriment remains the favorite, backers taking (i to 4 about, his winning. Rudolph is next in demand at 2 to 1. The favorite tip is Merriment to win. with Singapore and Rudolph for places. Parliament will probably prorogue next week. Sept. 21. The Telegraph this morning states that a man implicated in the murder of Dr Cronin was a passenger from San Francisco by the Mariposa, which arrived here on Wednesday night. The police, it appears, received a cablegram from the American police authorities ordering them to watch the passengers, and offering a reward of twenty-thousand dollars for the arrest of the suspected person. Upon the firrival of the steamer the detectives went on board to make a search, find upon their approach the suspected individual locked his cabin door and declined to come out when ordered by the detectives to do so. He threatened to shoot anyone breaking in, and remained in a state of seige till Thursday, when he succeeded in eluding the vigilance of the officers, and escaped. MELBOURNE, Sept. 21. A clerk in George's drapery establishment, where a disastrous fire broke out on the evening of the 13th September, has confessed that he accidentally set fire to the place by dropping a match that he was unable to extinguish. The Antarctic Committee have received an offer from a well-known Norwegian whaler to send two steamers to the Antartic regions on an exploration cruise for a subsidy of L6OOO each. ADELAIDE, Sept. 20. There is a panic in the Exchange, owing to the discovery of a Large quantity of forged scrip, principally of the Broken Hill mines.
