EXTRAORDIN ARY STATEMENTS. Some extraordinary .statements were made at a meetingof the Wellington benevolent trustees a.s to fche manner in which persons are recommended for relief by local bodies. The Chairman said that three years ago the mayor of a borough recommended a person ns being a proper .subject for relief. An allowance of S.s per week for three months wa.s made. The mayor, who was a storekeeper, supplied the goods for 33 weeks. Some demur was made aboufc paying this, but the relief has been kept up for three years, the mayor having received £37 for goods supplied. The inspector visited the district recently, and according to a statement mado to him by the woman herself, .she never required relief, and .she had plenty of work, and had no intention of applying for it, but .she was persuaded by the mayor and others thafc she ought to have it. Against this, however, a trustee who had visited the district since then said he was fcokl by the ex-mayor referred to that fche woman required relief till her son got shearing to do. After some discussion it was decidod to give fche ex -mayor, who is highly respected in fche district-, a chance of explaining the matter. The Chairman mentioned an almost similar case in another district, bufc this has been nipped in the bud by the inspector's visit. He also said that he knew of a ease where ifc was discovered that the person receiving relief was not entitled to it, and the party who liad forwarded the recommendation on being spoken to about ifc said "I know. Bufc what woukl you have me do . I should be hounded down as a mean cuss if I tried to take the institution's allowance away." Ifc was decided that in future the supplying of goods should be as far as possible kept oufc of the hands of those making recommendations. At a meeting of the Dunedin subscribers to the Macandrew Memorial Fund it was decided to devote L 296 to the erection o" a monument over Mr Macandrew's grave, and to allocate tho balance to the erection of a fountain or other suitable memorial in the city.
