Ball at Tuparoa.

(fkom a correspondent.) Waipiro, Sept. IJ). In consequence of a kind invitation from the Committee of the " Tuparoa Settlers Ball" I proceeded there last Friday evening and spent a very enjoyable time. The dance was held in Sir Geo. Whitmore's spacious wool shed which was very handsomely decorted with evergreens, mottos, Ac. Immediately opposite the main entrance was a handsome arch, bearing fche suitable inscription, " Success to Waiapu' County" (which I have no doubt emanated from the local boniface), and ou either end was " Welcome to Waipiro" and " Welcome to Awanui." The decoration I believe wis principally carried out by the ladies of the locality. Dancing commenced at 8.30 p.m., the first item on the programme being the " Grand March and Polka." This particulor dance has grown into quite an institution on fche coast. The first part of the programme was exactly finished at 1*2. 30, when we were introduced to tlie supper room, which was, indeed, delightful, and it certainly seemed a pity to disturb the artistic arrangements of the different dishes which adorned the table. But, alas ! what will not voracious man do ( In less time than it takes to write this sketch, it had all the appearance of a battlefield, mutilated carcases of roast fowl being observable in all directions, also the smiling countenances of the partakers thereof. Each and all spoke in high praise of the caterer- who got up such a splendid repast. I have since learned that it was Mrs Jenkins, of the Tuparoa , Hotel. The second part of the programme was equally successful, and continued until the grey dawn. Mr Bousfield, the courteous M.C, carried out his duties to perfection, as did every other member of the Committee. The young ladies all looked so charming thab it is impossible for me to decide who was " belle." I will, therefore, leave ifc an opeu question. The residents of Tuparoa are to be congratulated on their signal success. The Tuparoa Ball was not made to look as for the benefit of the hotel, as it was closed the enfeire evening. We have "now " the same state of tilings at Waipiro, for which Mr Milner and Mr Connolley deserve the thanks of the community. I
