Captain Saville, the Governor's aidc-de-comp, who has been laid up with a serious attack of typhoid fever, is now almost convalescent, and left for Nelson to-day. Some time back considerable excitement was occasioned at -Carterton owing to the sudden disappearance of the child of Mr Thompson, one of the residents there. Several search parties were out,but no trace was found of the body until yesterday, when it was found in a gully live miles from where the child was last seen alive. Decomposition was in an advanced stage, and the head was severed from the trunk. An inquest will be held. About LOOO has been subscribed in aid of the relatives of those of tho pilot crew drowned at the Heads a few weeks back. One-eighth goes to Mrs Cox, wife of one of the crew, one-eighth to the mother of another, LSO to the parents of the late Pilot Simms, and the balance, about L4OO, to be vested for Mrs Simms and her children. The steamer Huia has grounded on the South Spit of the Manawatu river, but is expected to be floated off to-night. The City Council have appointed Mr G. V. Kemsley, formerly of Napier and Spit Brigades, Captain of the Wellington Fire Brigade, viae Captain Page deceased. Parliament is prorogued by Gazette, proclamation to December 11). The building was insured in the London and Lancashire for L 750 and in the Colonial for L3OO, and the stock and furniture in the New Zealand for L3OO and the Union LIOO. Mr Richards, lessee, estimates his loss at L'3oo above the latter amounts, The inmates had a narrow escape. Several other buildings were slightly damaged. OAMARU, To-day. Mv Hislop addressed the electors last night, referring particularly to the workdone by tlie Government in the way of retrenchment and stable economy, and promoting settlement of land in small areas. A vote of thanks and confidence was carried unanimously. DUNEDIN, To-day. Lord Carrington, Governor of New South Wales, cables that he will be present at the opening ceremony of the Exhibition. CHRISTCHURCH, To-day. An inquest was held yesterday at the Lunatic Asylum on the body of Joseph Blore. Blore was the first lunatic in the province. He was committed in 1857, and died un Tuesday of senile decay.
