[Pkr Prks* Association. — DopviuohxJ WELLINGTON, To-day. The Hinemoa left last evening for Nelson, conveying the Go\ernor, who takes up his residence there for some weeks. The Arawa left Rio for London on the 11th inst. with her meat in good condition. The Post states a private letter received by to-day's mail from San Francisco, and written by a well-informed correspondent, states : — " There is very strong agitation on foot to adopt a policy of subsidising the American steamship lines as a measure of national defence against British aggressive policy, and this feeling has been intensified by the terms of the latest Canadian-Pacific subsidy as embodied in a treasury minute. A great representatives' conference on the subject of steamship subsidies and an Australian cable will be held here on the 29th inst. It is probable Congress will meet in October next, but that is uncertain. I have no doubt that the Australian service will be subsidised by Congress. William E. Bannister, formerly clerk in the Postal Department, was committed to trial on the second charge of misappropriating Government moneys. The other charges were remanded. 1 learns friends are bestirring themselves in his interest, and are arranging means for providing the necessary stake for his race with Stephenson. AUCKLAND To-day Kohimo Houngariri has reported to the police that over twenty Mahurangi natives attacked him on Saturday and carried off his daughter, aged 19, who was stripped naked in the struggle. The only reason they gave was that the girl had spoken bad words about some of the tribe, having reference to some superstition. A dozen of the police force Avere despatched yesterday afternoon to arrest the ringleaders. Messrs Brookiield and Son, solicitors, have sued Captain M. Yates, Mayor of Onehunga, for L2OO damages for alleged slander.
