THE NAPJF.R-G IS BORNE CONTEST. Thk annual race between crews belonging to Napier and Gisborne Clubs took place this afternoon on the Taruheru river, the course being from the brickyard to the Club's boatshed. The Napier crew started away from the shed a few minutes before three, and were followed shortly after by their opponents. Before they started the tide had turned, so that they had the tide with them daring the race. At the start Gisborne was first to grip the water and forged to the front, gradually drawing away, holding a, slight lead for the first quarter-mile. Napier then begnu to come up, and steadily forced their boat ahead until they got a clear lead. Rounding the bend at Graham's they further increased the gap, and on reaching the footbridge led l-y several length.-, which distance they maintained until the. pistol announced the \vi>.
