A STRANGE DEATH.
MYSTERIOUS OCCURRENCE AT LYTTELTON. Christchukch, to-day. A strange occurrence is reported from Lyi - telton. About half past 9 last night tw ■> seamen observed a man, apparently carrying a swag, go across the railway line from Hillaide and deliberately walk over the edge of the wharf into the sea. The sailors ran to the spot and saw a man struggling in the water, and called to him, but he made no response, and a few moments after he sank from sight. The night watchman and men obtained a boat and . carcluul the locality in the rain. This mo. n'ng the police, after | dragging for more than an hour, recovered a bundle containing a number of old and worthless articles of clothing, etc., and a Bible. In this were written David Breeze, County Down, Ireland, and two other addresses, Dalton-On-Furness, and Rihima, Waimatu Plains. The names are unknown to the police here. The body has not yet been recovered.
