"PUF F" ON PROTECTION
This from " Puff" in the Press :— "Tho Auckland Industrial Association have- resolved to make- a prohibitory tariff the solo plank in their political platform !" *' All, coma now, that's straight ! We know where we are when people talk like that ! The Auckland Industrial Association have the courage of their opinions ! They're not afraid to say what Uiey really want I" "Do they want the importation of goods from abroad to be forbidden altogether V " Yes, so as to compel people to buy the local article, and so give a monopoly to colonial industries and manufactures !" " Well, but that's what the Protectionists are driving at too!" "Of course they are, only they daren't say ao ! Tho Auckland Association have let the cat out of the bag, that's all !" "They have a notion that it would keep the money in the country!" "Yes, isn't that splendid ? I tell you what it would do, it would keep tho woul and the grain and the meat and all our other products in the country, simply becauso oar trade would be destroyed and we wouldn't be able to sell anything!" "That would be rather awkward, would'nt it ?" " Decidedly awkward ! It would bring the whole country to grief in next to no time, and everybody who had anything to lose would sell out and clear out !" " Luke says it would be better if wo had nc trade! He aaya that a bushel of wheat that is only worth 3s here is sent to England where it is worth ss, and comes back in the shape of clothing ! Isa't that shocking ?" "Horrid, isn't it? Haha ! Why that's the very essence of Freetrade, to sell in tho dearest market and buy in the cheapest ! Why should the man who's grown the bushel of wheat be compelled to exchange it for 3s worth of clothing here when he can get 5s worth for it in England ? How's the poor devil to live if he isn't allowed to make any profit on his wheat ! That's the whole thing in a nutshell !" " Yefc Ballance says Protection is all we want to set the colony ri^ht V "It doesn't matter what Ballance says ! He ■aya whatever suits for the moment ! ILused to be just as hot on Freetrado as he now is on Protection ! What he's after now is to pick up the votes of the most ignorant and selfish of the people !" "Oh yes, it's only a political dodge ! You can see that sticking out plain enough "
