H.B J.C STEEPLECHASE MEETING Napier, last nighb. The Hawke's Bay Jockey Club Steeplechase meeting on Monday was a great success, though the day was anythingbut inviting, occasional showers falling. '1 ho attendance numbered rouyhly 2000, and they witnessed a day's splendid racing. The course was heavy, but although the ground was soft the running was good. The t >taliaators put through £3000 and the dividends wero good. Threo horses fell in the bis; Steeplechase Handicap on the third time round. Denbigh was tho first to fall, and her rider (Ellingham) received concussion of the brain, but has now recovered. Orient and Victor fell at the stonewall coining into the straight, but their riders escaped unhurt. Tho Bracelet was won by Mrs G. P.Donnelly, who appropriated the same race last year. On Mangahone winning the big event cheers wont up, as this made the double of the day fall to Mr Donnelly's horses. The following ia a short account of the racing : — Maiden Steeplechase of 100 aovs., second horse to receive 15 soys. from the stake. About 2 miles. Tatham's Urunus, 3 yrs, 11.12 (Lyford) 1 Hollo's Echo, G yn, 12.3 (Hollo) ... 2 Ryan's llimu, s yrs, J I.l2 (Joyce) ... 3 Tawhana 11.0, Karamu 12.3, and Flying Jib 12.3, also ran. Karamu was tirst away, but after going a few strides Echo took up the running. The jump 3 wore well taken by all the horses, Echo maintaining the lead until about half a mile from home, when Lyford on Urunus called on his horse and jumping the stone wall with Echo then came away and won easily, Echo four lengths away second, Rimu third, and Jib fourth. Time, 5 mm 10 sec. Div. £3 11s. Ladies' Bracelet, of 100 soys. and a bracelet valued at 80 soys. for the first horse, aud a bracelet valued at 20 soys. for the second horse ; gentlemen rider:. Weights— 3 years 10.12, 4 years 11.5, 5 yeara 11.12, G years and aged 12.0. No allowances. Two miles on the flat. Mrs G. P. Donnelly's Mangahake, 5 years (Shaw) 1 Mrs W. Y. Dennett's Waralha, 3 yrs 1 (Lorrigan) 2 Mrs Vallance'a Voltiguer, aged (C. Vallance 3 Brown Duke, Sheet iron, Kahu, Spinifex, Patriot, Officer, Kitty Totara, and Water-color also ran. Kitty Totara was the first away, and with Brown Duke and Kahn led alternatively until coming into the straight tho last time, when Man^ahake and Warama waltzed to the front, but the former had more foot, and won comfortably by two lengths, Voltiguer a bad third. Time, 4min 33ec. Div., £14 6s. Hawke's Bay Steeplechase Handicap, of 500 boys., the second horse to receive 50 soys, and third horse 25 soys from the stakes. Distance about '6h ■. miles. Mr G. P. Donnelly's Mangahane, 5 years, 9.12 (Redmond) 1 Mr G. P. Donnelly's Owhaoko, 4 yrs, 10.10 (Hickey) 2 Mr P. H. Dickson's Romeo, aged, 10.0 (E. Gilpin) 3 Denbigh (11.0), Silvio (11.9), Orient (11.7), Victor (10.9), Erebus (10.7), and Waitangi (9.10), also started. Orient went to the front from a capital start and led, followed by Mangahane, Owhaoko, and Romeo, well together, the rest tailing off. Orient kept his lead for fully two miles and a half, when Victor came up to him and led over the double in the plough, but Orient was a^ain in command at the water jump, but the stone wall brought him down, aa also Victor. This left Mangahone wilh the lead, which he kept to the finish, winning comfortably by three lengths from Owhaoko, liomeo a good third. Silvio, the favorite, was never dangerous. Time, Bmin. 3sec. Div.,£/ 4s. Sealing St3BPlechaBß, of 50 aovs, aeoond horse to- receive 10 soys from the stakes, and not less than lOst up. Distance about H miles. Dickson's Romeo, aged, (E. Gilpin) ... 1 Ryan's Rimu, oyrs (Redmond) ... 2 Rollo's Othello, aged (Rollo) 3 Wellwood's Blackbird, aged (Pearson), also ran. Doubtful wa3 scratched. Rimu led until the second stone wall was reached when Romeo came away, but Rimu came on again and a magnificent finish resulted between the pair, Romeo , just getting homo by a head. Time, 3min 3sec;div., £3 9s. Consolation Steeplechase Handicap, of 1008ovs, second horse to receive 20 soys from the stake ; distance about two miles. Rollo's Echo, Gyrs, Oat, (Redmond) ... 1 Shearsly's Orient, aged, list 121 b (MeCormick 2 Scott's Waitangi, aged, lOst 101 b (Pell) 3 Flying Jib, 9st 71b, also started. Orient took command of affairs until coming into the straight, when Echo challenged him and eventually won by a length, Waitangi a good third. Time, omin lOaec ; div, £2 16s.
