SIR J. WHITWORTH DEAD.

London, Jan. 25. The death is announced of Sir Joseph Whitworth, Baronet, F.R.S., LL.D., the eminent mechanician and maker of guns. He was in his 84th year. [Born at Stockport in 1803, but always lived in Mancheater, where he was head of the great engineering firm of Whitworth and Co. First acquired fame by some great inventions shown at the Exhibition of 1851. Studied projectiles, and produced firearms of then extraordinary range and accuracy, and for years was a rival of Mr W. Armstrong in producing the best national ordnance. Made a Baronet in 1869, and in the same year instituted 30 scholarships of £100 a year each, tenable for three years, for encouragement of mechanical and engineering science. Wrote on subjects of guns and st' 1 1, and made improvements in the fcorpe.io. Made LL.D. of Edinburgh in 1878.]
