INSTALLATION OF MAYOR.

4. — The Borough Council met at noon to-day for the purpose of installing the Mayor. Present : Mayor Lewis, Messrs Cresswell, Graham, Whin ray, Wilson, Tovvnley, Dunlop, and Major Porter, the Mayor elect. The retiring Mayor said he had much pleasure in handing over the office to Major Porter, and as this was the fifth occasion on which that gentleman had occupied the Mayoral chair he was well acquainted with the duties, and needed nointroductioii. During the time he(MrLewis) had occupied the chair he had endeavored to act fairly and without fear or favor. He had boon severely criticised by a section of the Press, but had not been intimidated by the criticism dealt out to him, and if lie had erred on any occasion it had been but want of judgment on his part, for he in no way ever attempted to shirk his duty and in all matters acted to the best of his ability. Major Porter then signed the usual declaration and avid he could only say he > would do his duty, and as there were but two strangers to him amongst the present Councillors the Council would need but few assurances from him. Conflicting interests and contentions arosoin all public bodies, and noraanwa* infallible, but he would alwys endeavor to act rightly .. allowing his own judgment to be con- ' trolled by the majority of thj Council. He had much pleasuro in again coming amongst them, and would do his best. The retiring J-Ja^or had not been with the Council as lony as he (Major Porter) could have wished to have seen, cv* as he ought to have been in justico to himself, and on some future occasion he should attain like to see him as the occupant of ,i/he Mayoral chair. Cr Townley proposed a voto of thanks to tho retiring Mayo;-. it had been an exceptional year, as they iiad had two Mayote. He should have liked to have seen Mr McDonald present on this occasion, but they all know he had ; recency t M e£ y/i.Ui a very serious accident, which prevented his '.being ao.
