THE GOVERNMENT POLICE.

The Auckland Star's Wellington correspondent says : — lt is freely rumored that one result of the long Cabinet meetings held recently is an important modification in the general policy of the Government. According to this rumor Ministers having observed with deep concern the unfavorable result of the last loan and the large and persistent falling off in the revenue have come to the conclusion that a policy of strict economy in administration and of resolute abstention from further increasing the debts of the colony must be carried out until matters improve. It is said that even those members of the Government who have hitherto consistently been most favorable to what is commonly styled a " progressive " and "courageous" course, now recognise the advisableness of " putting on the brake for a time."
