ACCIDENT TO A STEAMER.
... ♦ Wellington, to-day. The Westport Coal Company's steamer Kamitiri, which left Wellington for Westport on Tuesday, returned to this port this morning, and the captain reports having struck Rangitoto Island, near Durvillo Island, at 10.40 p.m. on Tuesday. It appears that the chief officer was on deck at the time and the weather was thick. He caught a glimpse of land a minute ov t'.vo before the vessel struck. The engines I v/ijie reversed, but with no avail. Attempts were made to edge the vessel off, but were unsuccessful. The captain sent a boat to intercept the steamer Oreti, bound from Lyttelton to Westport, which was done, and the steamer came to the assistance of the Kamitiri and managed to pull her off. The Kamitiri is making a little water, and will go on the slip and bo iiurvuyod. The vessel is insured.
