FIRE BRIGADE CONTESTS.
THE TOTAL RESULTS
HOW GISBORNE SHAPED. Napier, last night. To-day's Herald says :— " In the engine practice for ono man tho Gisborno competitors acquitted themselves w nderfully well, considering that this brigade has only been recently formed. They did not succeed in placing themselves, but did their work cleanly, and their pluck _in entering for so many contests in wliich crack teams were engaged secured for the Gisborneites a lot of good wishes." Last night's Telegraph thus refers to tho Gisborne team : — " In the hose and ladder practice Gisborno ran down fairly, but a bungle was made at the plug, and the \ water, contrary to the usual custom, took a long time to come." As to the engine practice for ono man the same paper says : — " The Gisborne man, for a new chum, did fairly well, but hung over the belt a bit. He got a cheer for his work and pluck. He was penalised for a bad section. The second man began well, but got flurried. Later on in tho baby rescue Gisborne led off. They travelled down slowly, got up the ladder, and amid roars of laughter seized the infant." The general opinion here and among the firemen is that Giaborne did well for a new team, and there was considerable regret that they did not secure a prize ; but many older Brigades are in the same position. The banquet took place to-night. The following are amounts won by the various teams, taking the trophies at their cash value ; — Dunedin £171 15 0 Ballarat City HT 12 0 Napier ... yj 0 0 Spit 88 ti 0 Rangiora 11 0 0 Auckland 10 0 0 Kumara 5 0 0 New Plymouth 0 0 0 Wanganui 5 6 0 Masterton 4 4 0 Timaru 4 0 0 In addition the two Ballarat teams each got £20 towards their expenses. Dunedin was very lucky, the Ballarat City team being disqualified for the big event for not hitting the disc with wator, as their time was the fastest, and to-day on very heavy ground in running off against the Spit for second aggregate they beat the Duuediii's winning time. The Greytown, Hastings, and Gisborne Fire Brigades have been admitted to membership of the United Fire Brigades' Association. It has been agreed to order 500 membership certificates from England, and brigades requiring certificates are requested to send in applications at once. A hearty vote of thanks was passed to the retiring officers, and the following were elected officers for the ensuing year : — President, Superintendent Waterworth (Napier) ; Vice-Presidents, Captains Michel (Hokitika) and Mitchell (Port Chalmers) ; Secretary, Branchman Bogle (Napier). Votes of thanks were also adopted to the Napier and Spit Brigades, and to the inhabitants of Napier for their hospitable treatment of the Association, and for the liberality of the demonstration prize-list. One of the Ballarat; men injured his tight arm badly at hydrant practice, but pluckily ran and worked with his team all day. Then the injured limb became most painful and it was found that one of the small bones of the arm had been broken.
