CAPT BARRY AT MAKARAKA.

This gentleman gave his first lecture in Poverty Bay last evening, before a most appreciative audience at the Public Hall, Makaraka. For fully an hour-and-a-half, Capt Barry kept his audience in a state of excitement as he told them the thrilling narratives of his own adventures and experiences of New Zealand life from the doings when civilisation was unknown in this land to the present juncture of New Zealand history. As he told of his interview with the Claimant to the Tichborne estates, when visiting England, much enthusiasm was evinced. This subject is still fresh in the memories of the people, who, whether the Claimant is the real Sir Roger or not, feel that the man serving such a long term of penal servitude has not been fairly treated. Capt. Barry, as a witness in this memorable case, avers that— and he bases his argument on personal knowledge gleaned from an acquaintance with Arthur Orton and by his visit to England—he is the real Sir Charles Roger Doughty Tichborne. The lecturer also afforded some interesting information respecting the King Country, and his interview with Tawhiao and Te Ake. He thinks that every effort should be made to get this splendid tract of land opened up, which would be a great boon to the European population of New Zealand. The lecture was in various ways very interesting. We ndvise all who can make it convenient this evening not to miss the opportunity of attending McFarlane's Hall and hearing this old identity and traveller.

" When a man begins to go down hill," Bays a cynic, "he finds every thing greased for the occasion.
