ELECTION OF MAYOR.

This day, at; noon, Captain Thomas William Porter, Commanding Officer of the District, was elected, unopposed, as Mayor of the Borough Council of Gisborne. This is the fourth time the gallant Captain has been returned as the Chief Municipal Magistrate for the town. In 1879, and again in 18S0, he was returned without opposition. In 18S1 he contested the election with Mr. W. F. Crawford, and was returned upon the majority of three votes. The Mayorship thin fell with its honors to C. D. Bennett, Esq., now of the firm of Graham, Pitt and Benrett, who was succeeded by E. K. Brown, Esq. Immediately previous to the expiry of his municipal responsibilities a strong requisition was presented to Captain Porter, asking him to stand his candidature. To this the Captain gave a favorable response, and, as already stated, was this day returned without opposition. Captain Porter is most deservedly a popular man. Much is due to the industry and attention he gives to any work or undertaking of which he accepts the responsibility. He is kindly of disposition, generous of heart, and possesses a bon homme which makes him a pleasant companion in whatever society for the time being he may be associated with. We wish our new Mayor all the success which may attend his efforts for the advancement of the town, social and political. Whatever a man can accomplish in this direction, we have no fear but what Captain Porter will be to the front in every effort which i 3 likely to accomplish his purpose.
