NEW PLYMOUTH.

This Day. The Government received yesterterday an important telegram from the Inspector of Police at New Plymouth. The Inspector stated he had received a communication from one of Te Whiti's principal chiefs, a man of high standing and respectability, to the effect that the late trespass upon settlers' lands in Taranaki district was directly contrary to the orders of Te Whiti, who apologised for the conduct of his fellow-countrymen, but expressly repudiating all responsibility for their misdeeds, and declaring he had given most positive orders

that none of the settlers on the confiscated lands should be interfered with or molested in any way. Parris has been instructed to go at once to .see Te Whiti on the subject, and neanwhile the settlers who have been intruded upon will be directed co take legal proceedings against the i natives for trespass, in which proceedings they will receive the support of the Government. The Maori trespassers still continue ploughing operations on Courtney's farm at Tapanae. They commence work at 3 o'clock every morning, and take the ploughs away with them in the evening, when they leave. A family recently residing at Oamata are so dissatisfied with the aspect of affairs that they yesterday quitted the district and left for Canterbury. The Natives' state they have no ill-feeling towards settlers, but it is the Government they wish to have an understanding with. They have uo desire to fight, but having thrown down the gaunleb it is for the Government to settle the matter.
