ALTON LIBRARY A meeting of the subscribers to the Alton Library was held on Monday last, Mr J. Gibbs presiding. There was a good attendance of members. The minutes of the previous annual meeting were read and coniirmed . The annual report and balance sheet were read, the latter showing a credit balance of £26/10/-. The report stated that 100 new books had been added to the shelves during the present year, as against 80 last year. The building had been re-painted and everything was in good order. The institution was in a good financial portion, thanlw mainly to tho generos’iy ci" Airs Williams ad Mr Jas. Gibbs In endowing the library with tho sum of £OOO, the interest on which helped materially towards the purchase of new books ,etc. It was unanimously resolved to place on record the appreciation of subscribers of the work of Mrs Kettle, who has acted as honorary librarian, and Mr Mitchell, who has acted as assistantlibrarian, and who is leaving the district.
The election of officers for the year resulted as follows; —Chairman, Mr Jas. Gibbs; secretary, Mr Davis; committee, Messrs Ncilson, Clearance and Kettle. The meeting then adjourned.
