VALEDICTORY

ME AND MRS McCAETHY A large number of friends met at Mr H. Heginbotham’s residence on Tuesday evening last to bid farewell to Air aiid Mrs McCarthy ,who have relinquished their interest in the Commcrc al "Hotel, Wavcrlcy, and are leaving the district. During the evening, songs were rendered by Misses Hill, Eitzgibbon, Mesdames H. Hcginbotham, W. Heginboth botham, Messrs McCarthy, Sherborne and Taylor. Mr Currie contributed recitations; and several choruses were also given by those present .

Mr -Currie, in a very humorous speech, paid a tribute to the manner In which their guests had run their hotel during their stay in Waverlcy. He asked Mrs McCarthy to accept a pretty ■Boulton teapot, and Mr McCarthy a pipe, and Master Tom McCarthy an electric torch. Mr Currie asked thorn to accept the small presents, not for their value, but in the spirit in which they were given, and as a mark of the esteem in which the McCarthy’ family were held by their friends and well-wishers. He wished them, on behalf of those present, every happiness and prosperity in the future. This was followed by the singing of “They Arc Jolly Good Fellows.” ■Mr McCarthy, who received an ovation, thanked those present for thenpresentations, and the kindly references regarding himself and family. He hoped the public would give his 'successor, Mrs Topoy, a fair share of their custom. Mrs Topey was well known to the travelling public, she having kept the Fordcll Hotel.

The singing of "Auld Lang Sync” brought a very pleasant evening to a close. MRS J. JOHNSTONE - One of Waverlcy’s oldest residents, Mrs J. Johnstone, of "Craig Lea,” who is leaving the district, was the recipient of a presentation from the St. Andrew’s Church congregation last week.

Mrs Johnstone came to Waverlcy on attaining the ago of 13 years, residing at Kohi.. From here she kept in touch with the Church, attending the services when the church that now stands, was not in existence, the services then being, held in a small hall where the Town Board Booms arc now located. St: Andrew’s Church was built in the year 187(5, and Mrs Johnstone is one of the few residents now in Waverlcy who attended the opening service, and since then she has taken an active part in the Sunday School and the P.W.M.U. All those who have had the pleasure of being under her tuition will know what is is to have a conscientious teacher.

In her later years, Mrs Johnstone has been a patient nurse, and all those who knew her friendship and hospitality will join in wishing her good health and happiness for many years to come.
