EFFECTS IN MARTINIQUE. AN ISLAND DEVASTATED. New York, September 29. Practically the whole of the North of Martinique has been declared uninhabitable, and the townships have been transferred to the southern districts of the island. Sydney, September 30. Eastern newspaper files give details of a volcano eruption which took place in the Torigama Island, in the Bonin group (due north of New Guinea) early in the present month. Huge volumes of smoke and sand were emitted from the centre of the island, the shape of which was entirely changed. There were 160 residents on the island, but their fate is unknown.
