THE ADVANCE IN SCIENCE.

There are many reasons to believe that before many years are over tbo telautograph will be in as general use as the telephone, The Chicago Times Herald reproduces a number of autograph letters sent by it, by means of the new method of transmitting messages, from Cleveland, a distance of 461 miles. They are very clear, and are said to bo exact fac similes of the original 'messages. The machine used was the invenfion of Professor Elisha Gray. It is the result of many years of labour and is believed to have reached the point of perfection. No operator is required. The sender of the message writes on the transmitter with an ordinary pen or pencil which are connected with the machine by two thin rods of steel. As ho writes cvi ry letter and curve and line is i©produced at the other end of the wire by a pen which works automatically and duplicates the original message with a faithfulness which nothing could exceed. By this ingenious instrument it will be possible for a war artist to telegraph a sketch from the battlefield. Indeed there is no limit to the possibilities which this invention opens up to the imagination.
