PATEA WEST ROAD BORD.

The above Board held its usual meeting on Friday last, when there'were present— Messrs 0. Symos (chairman), Hurley, McCarthy, Paterson, Wilford, Williamson and Wilkie. Minutes of former meeting read and confirmed. Correspondence dealt with; from County Council (circular letter) offering to grant three-fourths of subsidy to Road Boards striking no rates, and other ad vantages to those striking three-farthing rate. There was very considerable discussion on this circular, and a general intimation was exhibited to make this matter the only business of the day. Re letter from Patea County Council, Mr Wilford moved, “That the Patea -West Road Boar 3, after considering the proposition made to them by the County Council, beg to submit to their consideration the following circumstances: ‘That the impression derived from the circular of June,' 1895, re poll for Whenuakura Bridge loan, by the ratepayers, was that the poll being carried the councillors could see their way to reduce the general rate for the ensuing year; That the present proposition fails in that respect except at the expense of the income of the Road Board;’ ‘That to reimburse the Road Board for this loss, it would be necessary to alter the proposition to seveneighths of the subsidy instead of threefourths, as proposed;’ ‘That considering the Council were in the position (should this proposition not have been made) to have materially reduced the general rate for the ensuing year, and that it will now remain as before, the Patea West Road Board hope the Council will see its way to grant them (instead of the threefourths) the whole of the Government subsidy, which would render them Jvery necessary assistance in the present embarrassed state of their finances ;’ * That should the Council see their way to carry out either of the above proposals, the Patea West Road Board will gratefully refrain from levying any rate for the ensuing year.’ ” ' This was seconded by Mr P. McCarthy, and after discussion was carried unanimously. The ballot for retiring members was then taken, with the result that Messrs Hurley, Paterson and Symos retire at the end of the first year. A resolution was then passed authorising the Board to obtain an overdraft to the full extent of the income, and a resolution was theii passed adjourning the meeting to the IGth inst, and the Board * adjourned accordingly.
