CRICKET.

HAWKE’S BAY v. WELLINGTON (pee press association.) WELLINGTON, Feb. 25. The cricket match was resumed today. The Hawke’s Nay wickets fell rapidly to Firth and McGirr, till Riley ami White became partners. The score was then at 37 for six, wickets, and there was little hope of saving a one innings’ defeat. The stout captain, however, batted, placidly, and While hit well, and showed good defence. He drove the ball hard into Cox’s hands, but escaped, and bit all the bowlers frequently to leg. Riley also made, some good log hits, but his stumps had several shaves. Ho lifted Dry den to the paviilion over the ropes, and Gore, who had been bowling without ■ any luck, was put on at the opposite end. He knocked White’s off stump over in the second ball, and then took two more wickets tor one run. The one innings’ defeat was just saved by the fine stand made by White and his captain. The former played with a very straight bat, hit cleanly, ami showed excellent defence. Riley was out last, his being the only wicket that Lawson secured in the second innings. He made 22 ia a style that caused great amusement to the spectators, but he showed considerable acquaintance with the art of batting. The Wellington fielding was again good, although two catches were missed, and Firth, as usual, evinced much discrimination in changing his bowling. The two Blackwoods made the three runs required by Wellington to win. This is the third match between the provinces, and Wei lington Ims won two of them.
