He is heir to £12,000, now on its way out to him. AUCKLAND, March 3. The Government have declined to recognise the Harbour Board’s claim for £45,000, compensation in respect of appropriation for Government purposes of Mechanic’s Bay intake. At the City (South) Licensing Bench, the chairman stated that the committees would have to put down Sunday trading themselves, vs the police were powerless to suppress it. Vicc-supeiinlendent Thomson severely blamed the bench for dismissing cases, even when the publican pleaded guilty, March 4. .Sir James Prendergast has been elected jKllow of the New Zealand University. ~ WELLINGTON, This day. Government have had under their consideration the distiibution of the special vote of £60,000, passed last session for school buildings. The sum of £50,000 has been distributed amongst the several education districts according to population. The sum of £3750 has been taken for Industrial schools and Native schools, and the balance, £6250, has been divided amongst Boards as nearly as possible, according to their several necessities. The following are the several sums granted for the current financial year Auckland, £10,682 ; Taranaki, £1342 ; Wanganui, £2736 ; Wellington, £5007 ; Hawke’s Bay, £3159; Marlborough, £1146 ; Nelson, £2707 ; North Canterbury, £9439 ; South Canterbury, £2830 ; Westland and Grey, £2574 ; Otago, £11,128, and Southland, £3500. Circulars on the subject of school buildings vote have just been issued. The cricket match, Nelson v Wellington, was commenced ro-day. 'lho latter went in first and have lost 4 wickets for 49. Later. At the Luncheon adjournment, Wellington had lost 7 wickets for 120 runs.
