HARBOUR BOARD

- The Board met' at 2.30 p.m, on Monday. Present—Messrs " Gibson (chairman), Sheild, R. A. Adams, J. Richards, .Previous to the ordinary business a special meeting was held to consider an alteration in.tha now ,by-laws, the.secretary to the Customs having pointed out that Schedule 3, levying a tonnage rate of 6d per ton on vessels, was contrary to the Act, such charge being only liable to be paid by vessels once in six months. - After discussion - - the by-law was amended to read as follows: Port charges on steamers or sailing, vessels being moasters—each trip inwards or outwards, sixpence per ton register, provided that the total charges upon the same vessel in any one half year shall #not exceed 6d per ton; Vessels occupying berths at the wharves will be charged on all cargo landed or shipped t® be paid to the collector before the' vessel be removed, per ton 6d. Ordinary Meeting. - - Correspondence was read from Mr F. •.O’S.' ; McCarthy - complaining that damage was being done to his section by .the way the gravel contractors were working.' - Ordered to lie on the tablel From Captain Flowerday that the railway contractors were depositing spoil in the river.

HARBOUR LEASE, Messrs Patterson Brothers having deducted a portion of rent of their lease on account of some land having been taken for the railway by Government, Mr Adams moved . and Mr , Sheild seconded “ That Messrs Patterson be informed that the Harbour Board considers itself entitled to full rent for land leased to them, and that the Board respectfully requests payment of balance due ; failing such payment a friendly test case be tried in the R.M. Court.” Carried. pilot’s report, ■ The-pilot reported : The- bar is still the same a little to the eastward of the end of the breakwater with about ten feet of water at high water. The channel, at the end of the breakwater is about 70 feef wide. The contractors have stopped depositing earth into the river and I think no haruTis done. I have put bags of cement into the breakwater and the block does not move at present. There have been only seven arrivals and departures since my last report. The wharfinger also reported everything in good order. ACCOUNTS. The following wore passed for payment; —S. Taplin, £5 ss; Hawera Star, £1 4s; G. Cooper, 12s ;J. KenGibson, 6s 2d; Taylor, 26 s; Patea Mail , £4 16s. HARBOUR DISTRICT; Chairman read over some amendments which he suggested should be ma.de. .He proposed that the MU as amended be forwarded to the member with a request that he would introduce it. Seconded by Mr Sheild and carried. Board then adjourned.
