WAVERLEY.

[From our Correspondent.] Nov. 30. The larrikin element is again becoming prevalent in the town. Practical jokes are all very well in their way, and can be appreciated when there is any harmless fun in them. Some individuals, however, seem to think it a good joke to disfigure the front of the business places by removing sign-boards from one establishment and affixing them to neighbour’s premises, taking care, however, to choose the witching hour of midnight for their various performances. Saturday night is the favorite time for these little tricks, in order that the chnrchg-oing community may enjoy the joke in the morning. The survey of the Waverley Cemetery so.long talked of, is at length nearly complete. A meeting of the trustees takes place on Saturday evening, for the purpose of arranging for the election of two fresh trustees, in place of Messrs A. C. Fookes and W. McLeod, who have resigned through having left the district. The new Cemeteries Act passed last session, brings all cemetery reserves under the Act, and defines the powers of the trustees, &c., with more satisfaction than the old Provincial Ordinance, under which our Cemetery has hitherto been. The approaching Government Land Sale is expected to cause a little stir in our district, and no doubt the whole of the land offered will be disposed of. Some excellent roads are now available to the back country, and it is quite a pleasant ride, the views from some of the higher portions of the road being very picturesque. The Wairoa Highway Board hold their usual monthly meeting on Saturday next. Defaulting ratepayers will do well to remember that the financial year is drawing to a close. The Crown and Native Lands Rating Act will augment the funds of the Board, as according to the Act, the Board is entitled to claim rates for the current year, on all Crown Lands within (he Koad District.
