Protection, but the chairman declined to go into the question from that aspect, and those opposed to import duties left amid groans. The following day a deputation interviewed the Colonial Treasurer. Mr Service said the question la}’ between the farmers and the cabmen, the import duty serving the latter and oppressing the former. He denounced the whole artificial sjstcm of keeping up high prices. He said the deputation asked his assistance in a wrong direction, and he could not help them.
