RESIDENT MAGISTRATE’S COURT.

SATURDAY, APRIL 15th. (Before C. A. Wray and H. I. Christie Esqrs. J.P’s) There was one case of drunkenness before the Bench, in which the offender was fined 10s, with the alternative. STRANDING OK THE STEAMER EG MONT. The Bench asked if any papers or documents, directing this inquiry, had been received from the Collector of Customs. The acting clerk of the Bench said no. The Chairman said, that, in that case there was nothing before the Court. The Collector of Customs must ho communicated with, before the enquiry could take place. Captain Irvine said that the necessary declaration had been served on the agent, and that the pilot was also in attendance. The declaration was that of the vessel’s loss, The chairman said that the preliminary requirements had not been complied with, and there was nothing before the Court for the Bench to hear. The case then dropped, and the Court adjourned. TUESDAY, APRIL 18. (Before Major Turner, R.M.) CHARGE OF OBTAINING MONEY UNDER FALSE PRETENCES, Thomas Ingley was charged with obtaining the sum of £25 in three cheques, drawn on the Bank of New Zealand in Carlyle, at which he had no account. Mr Adams appeared for the defendant. Prosecutor gave his evidence to the effect Mat the prisoner had obtained cash for the cheques in question without having any money or an account in the banlc, to meet them. The case was adjourned till this morning.
