(From the Pahiatua “Star.” 4/1/93). This New Year lias been the wettest experienced since the Bush district has been settled. All sport had to be cancelled. Charles Hall, who recently disappeared from Mangahao with a large sum of money due to his mates has returned to Pahiatua in company with Constable Toohey, of Feilding and will appear in public very shortly.
A carpenter, by the name of Thompson (alias J. C. Field)* and engaged in alterations to the Commercial Hotel. yesterday dropped dead, while shifting planks in the yard. Deceased was heavily under ther influence of liquor at the time of his death.
The racing clubs during the New Year carnival of the 1 ‘sport of kings,” continued to extract 1$ per cent from the pockets of their customers through the use of the unpopular total isa tor. This infernal machine' was tried for its life at the last session of Parliament, and narrowly escaped being declared illegal.
