A Middle East joint wire communique states: “Yesterday there was nothing to report from our troops in contact with tlie enemy in the Wadi Bei el Chebir-Buerat area but there was an increase in air activity over til© battle area. In an engagement over an enemy landing ground, two ME 109’s were destroyed. Palermo was bombed and fires were started (in tb e harbour area on the night of January Ist. On the same night Heraklion airfield in Crete was attacked and other targets <*n the island bombed by a large force of Allied aircraft yesterday and from the above and other operations, three of -our aircraft aiv missing ”
