TERRIFIC GERMAN LOSSES
IN BATTLE FOR KOTFXNIKOVO United Press Assn—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright. LONDON, December 30. Reuters reports that Kotelnikovo fell after a four-day battle wherein the Germans lost 500 tanks, 25,(XX) killed and 5,000 captured. The Russians in one savage street battle, wiped out 700 and prisonered 400. In another engagement, 1500 prisoners were taken. The Russians have made an astonishing haul of booty which is still being counted A Russian column which earlier captured Zaventoyo in a wide sweep southwards of Kotelnikovo, is now approaching Elista. Russian advanced troops. racing south-westward across the Kalmuk steppes, captured Yshgul. 55 miles from Elista, on the main road from Elista to Astrakhan, gravely threatening the flank of the German armies southwards of the Don river.
