XMAS IN RETROSPECT
BETTER TRADING. Christmas trade was expected t > to reach a new height in cash takings and at least half a dozen Pahiatua business-men agree that this was achieved. Two grocers thought the actual orders were up to normal Christmas buying but increased prices caused a higher cash return. Actual figures could not be ascertained without detailed comparisons with invoices and stock sheets. A stationer said prices had not advanced so alarmingly in his line hut his takings had risen by a far greater percentage than the small price advances could explain. Americans gauge average turnover by the takings of the drug store on the corner. We have no such store on any corner here hut Pahiatua people bought more articles in that line, at one counter at least, than they had done at any former Christmas. Even the Post Office sold n any more postage stamps.
