SAMOAN IN NEW ZEALAND Claiming that be was not a New Zealand subject, Louis Henry Stowers, aged 25, a factory hand, appealed against military service before the Auckland No. 1 Armed Forces Appeal Board. Mr Webster, who appeared for the reservist, said that he was a Samoan, and under the Leaque of Nations Covenant the military training of a native of' Samoa was forbidden. It was stated that tli© reservist bad been notified last September that be could not remain ill the Dominion unless he renewed his passport. “He is being asked to fight for a country which will not allow him to stay in it,” said Mr Webster. Tn evidence it was shown that the reservist was bom in ’Samoa in 1917, before it became a mandate of New Zealand. His parents were both half-caste Samoans, although his father had become naturalised after the reservist was horn. The appeal was allowed.
