EIGHTH ARMY OCCUPIES SIRTE ENEMY STILL WITHDRAWING. ANOTHER OUTFLANKING THRUST. United Press Assn.—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright. LONDON, Dee. 26. A Middle East joint communique states: “Our troops occupied Sirte (halfway between El Agheila and Tripoli) at midday yesterday. They ar© in contact with the enemy, who are withdrawing to the west. There are no important ajr operations over the battle area. Yesterday two heavily-laden barges, sailing southward off the coast of Tunisia and the railway near Sousse, were successfully attacked by fighters. One of our aircraft is missing. Advanced units of the Eighth Army, methodically pursuing General Rommel’s forces, are reported to have reached Buerat, says Morocco radio. Rommel loft a strong Italian garrison at Misurata Berlin news agency states that a strong tank and motorised force from til© Eighth Army has thrust over 60 miles into th e Libyan desert in an attempt to outflank the Germans and Italians. Algiers radio says th© Allied advanced forces are within 12 miles of Tunis.
