CREAT CHINESE OFFENSIVE
LAUNCHED ON HUNAN FRONT QUARTER OF MILLION TROOPS TO BE USED. United Press Assn.—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright. LONDON. February 14. The Chinese have launched a great offensive on the Hunan front (south of Hankow), throwing a quarter of a million troops equipped with new artillery and mechanised units against 40.000 Japanese whom T>hey attacked with bayonets, says the Hong Kong correspondent of the Daily Telegraph. The Chinese inflicted heavv losses and in addition to capturing hundreds of prisoners and much war material they advanced several miles.
An Indejiendent Cable from Hong Kong says it is estimated that only 300,000 Japanese south of Manchukuo are facing twlo million Chinese regulars and a million more guerrilla troops inside their own lines. The reorganised Chinese air force also took the initiative for the first time, bombing and machine-gunning the Japanese trenches.
