WANDERING ROUND

AT THE PAHIATUA SHOW

SHOWMEN AND SALESMEN. • Notes by *' Obsei ver. ? ’) In ihe miniature town, witn two intersecting streets, that constituted tne sideshow ana exhibit Department of the Pahiatua Show on Saturday, there was sufficient material to kaep an observer amused for days at a time. The noise and bustle of sideshows calling out m to the public to coma and be entertained, or to make easy money with darts and rings in various ingenious ways, kept me occupied for some time, after which, stunned with marvels and somewhat lighter in pocket I strolled further along the ‘ street’’ to where various firms displayed their wares lor the allurement of the public.

1 first visited the W.F.C A. Garage stall, and had a look ai the laui.er • Jarav.au, a complete house on wheels, fitted with every modern convenience even to electric light, and 1 visualised the eoinlv>rt oi a camping holiday with all tin disadvantages ox “roughing it.” removed. J here were also the means of drawing the* travelling home in the shape oi brand-new Austins of every from the Baby, grown up into a “big seven, ; Uj the laige and spacious 12/6 I broke the tenth commandment and moved on.

At the next stand. 1 was met by an array of little chubby looking Morris cars at the exhibit of Barrett s Garage. Again a very attractive array of sizes, all of pleasing appearance, and, I was assured, embodying all the latest in motoring lefinemeuts. The new 10 in particular was praised, the maiiuiactiirer** having exerted themselves to produce the best 10-horse job on ii»o market. Two commercial truck* were in the background, whiJe towering over all was the huge Packard 8- a prince among motor-cars. Next door at Mac's Garage were some attractive little Standards, tho new 8 and 12 being displayed. 1 liked their air of compactness combined with ample space, while foi those who pi ef erred a larger car there was a Dodge on display. Terry’s Garage exhibit attracted some interest, with the two i ew Oilmens. of unusual but very pleasing design. Both the 12 and the 15 w*ie on display, look;ng ver* up-to-the-minute as indeed they are. tho manufacturers claiming that they are four years ahead in ear devel- < pment. At the end of ’lie street was Do:iald s Garage, with a large display of" English and American cars There were the Hillmans, lo and big brother 14. and the ro my Humber Snipe while the new-bor:i brothers \ the 1939 Chrysler and PJvjno.ii<T| made an attractive pair. in the background, exemplifying utility, was ail International Harvester truck chassis. The International Harvester Coy. bad a display. then : c locyvt, 24 and 34 ton trucks, and, of interest to farmers, a tractor fitted with power-driven mower, and a ver v impxessive and useful-looking hay-rake. \\ atts and La wry were next in order with a very imposing array of vehicles, headed by the ari>tocrauc and speedy VI2 Lincoln Zephyr, which was the admiration 01 ail beholders Besides this there were lords of all sizes. VB*s. do luxe and standard, and foi more moderate purses slim little B’s and tue. Utility vis represented by a imnd> >ine A 8 truck. Next door was J. c. Davidson's exhibit. consisting mostly of farm including a speedy rub-ber-tyred Massey-Harr is tractor and a double-furrow plough si serially designed by Massey-Harrii for New Zealand conditions. Finally there was D 1* Ryan’s display of three or lour brami-n tv 1939 Cbevrolets; pleasing in appearauee and with a range ot price- that scented to give most r ( ket- a chance 1 liked their modern and speedy appearance and > lid construction. The little Yar.xhaJl 10 was there also, almost dwarfed by tfie larger American cars, but *tili prodding plenty of room inside, aim. I was told, having an astonishingly low petrol consumption lor a ten. Altogether a very attractive* series of displays, and <ne which dr*w very large section <»r the crowd. Tho business people * i the district help t lu* interest of :Show ? it s a credit to the'r enteipriso and ingenuity that they succeeded in providing such an interesting type of exhibit.
