PAHIATUA COUNTY COUNCIL.

TREASURER S REPORT. The County treasurer (Mr J. Hutton) reported as under to Wednesday's meeting of the Pahiatua County Council for the month of January: “Under the heading of general cash receipts, the amount received for the ten months of the current financial year just ended amounts to £13,825 12s 2d as against £16,811 17s for the same period of last year, a decrease of £‘2986 4s lOd. Cash expenditure for the ten months of the current financial year just ended amounts to £23,238 19s 8d as against £21,145 10s 4d for the same period of last year, an increase of £2093 9s 4d. The cash credit balance brought forward for the current financial year was £1302 16s 2d as against a debit balance of £435 Is 6d for the previous year. Overdraft for the period under review stands at £BllO 11s 4d as against £4768 14s lOd for the same period of last year, an increase of £3341 16s 6d~. With ten months of the financial year gone, . I desire to draw your attention to the fact that in my opinion, the gap between expenditure and revenue is too great. For instance, one of our main sources of revenue (rates) appears in a bad light, in that £7903 10s 6d, representing 54 per cent, of the levy, is still outstanding. It does seem desirable that immediate action be taken to collect the current year’s rates. Again expenditure has increased by £2093 Is 4d for the same period of last year, and whilst there are always circumstances which bring about such a state of affairs, it is incumbent that the same should be kept within your budgetary proposals. “Statement of the current year’s rates and arrears of rates, showing amounts levied, collected and outstanding, is set out hereon for your information, ciz. : “Rates, 1938-39: Struck. If it is the Council’s intention to impose a penalty in respect of the current year’s rates remaining unpaid at the l;fth March, proximo., it will be necessary to pass a resolution to that effect and to give public notice of your intention so to do. “Particulars of Main Highways and Public Works grants, expenditure, subsidy claimed and outstanding to the 31st December. 1938, are as follows • “Maintenance: Xo. 6T Main Highway, annuil vote £2.907, expenditure £1572 16s 2d, subsidy claimed £1152 5s Id, subsidy paid £958 19s 7d, subsidy outstanding £193 5s 9d ; No. 84 Main Highway, annual vote £55, expenditure £27 14s 6d, subsidy claimed £2O 16s, subsidy paid £7 10s 4d, subsidy outstanding £l3 5s 8d; No. 342 Main Highway, annual vote £B3l, expenditure £755 14s Sd, subsidy claimed £563 18s 3d, subsidy paid £424 Os lid, subsidv outstanding £139 17s 4d : No. 442 Main Highway, annual vote £1195, expenditure £1155 19s Id, subsidy claimed £B6l Is lid, subsidy paid £BO4 19s 9d. subsidy outstanding £56 2s 2d; No. 555 Main Highwav, annual vote 147, expenditure £ll3 12s lOd, subsidy claimed £BS 4s Bd, subsidy paid £Bl 3s Bd, subsidy outstanding £4 Is; No. 557 Main Highway, annual vote £333, expenditure £252 4s 7d, subsidy claimed £lB9 3s 6d, subsidy paid £lßl 16s 7d. subsidy outstanding £7 6s lid; totals, annual vote £5498, expenditure £3878 Is lOd, subsidy claimed £2872 9s Bd, subsidy paid £2458 10s lOd, subsidy outstanding £413 18s lOd. “Construction : Hull's Bridge, annual vote £4164, expenditure £3543 14s 4d, subsidy claimed £I7BB 14s Bd, subsidy paid £798 9s lOd. subsidy outstanding £990 4s lOd ; McCardle’s C Overt, annual vote £570, expenditure £403 Os lid, subsidy claimed £2Ol 8s 6d, subsidy paid £6l 11s Id, subsidy outstanding £139 17s sd; Day’s Culvert, annual vote £846, expenditure £484 9s Id, subsidy claimed £242 4s 6d, subsidy paid €2O 2s sd, subsidy outstanding .£*222 2s Id; Rouse’s Bridge, annual vote £ll4B, expenditure £416 5s od, subsidy claimed £207 15s 9d, subsidy claimed £207 15s 9d, subsidv outstanding £207 15s 9d; Marima Bridge, annual vote £1376, expenditure £7OO, subsidy claimed £350, subsidy outstanding £350; Makairo and Wfl itakotorua Bridges, annual vote £9027, expenditure £631 10s sd. subsidy claimed £315 15s 3d, subsidy outstanding £315 15s 3d; totals, annual vote £17.131, expenditure £6179 0> 3d, subsidy claimed £3095 18s Bd, subsidv paid £BBO 3s 4d, subsidy outstanding £2225 15s 4d. “Of the sum of £2839 14s 2d outstanding in subsidy, £1649 9s 4d is payable to the County Fund Account and £990 4s lOd to Loan Account.”
