MARITIME INTERFERENCE
PROTEST FROM BRITAIN. (British Official Wireless.) RUGBY, August 26. As a result of consideration given by the Prime Minister yesterday at his meeting with Air Eden and Lord Halifax to recent attacks on shipping in the Mediterranean, and particularly to the case of attack on the British C orporal by insurgent aeroplanes and the subsequent case of the Xoewhich insurgent aeroplanes are suspected, representations are being made to the Salamanca authorities. It is understood that it has been pointed out that since belligerent rights have not been accorded to either side in the Spanish conflict no attack on a British vessel can in any circumstances l>e justified, and that even it belligerent rights had been accorded no merchant ship, whether enemy or neutral, may, according to international law, be attacked unless she fails to stop in compliance with a lawful request or thereafter resists lawful capture. It is lurther understood that the communication reserves the right, in case of further attacks on British vessels, to take such action as the occasion demands. LOYALIST SHIPS FLEE. HEXDAYE, August 26. The Spanish Government warships Diaz, Ciscar and Aleo and three submarines are reported to have fled from Santander last night. Their destination is unknown. TRESPASSING SUBMARINE ISTANBUL, August 27. Three Turkish warships arc at present patrolling the Sea of Marmora, in search of a foreign submarine which has been sighted there. Komal Ataturk has notified the Powers that if submarines enter the straits they will be captured and destroyed if they do not surrender. The raiding submarine is believed to he based on an Italian island, where it is fuelled and munitioned. Foreign steamers in Turkish ports are painting their national colours prominently on the sides, like neutrals in wartime. Valencia is permitting Spanish steamers to delay their departure from the Black Sea.
