THE CARPENTERS’ STRIKE.
NO SETTLEMENT AS YET. Electric Telegraph—Press Association AUCKLAXL. August 24. After three days’ negotiations no settlement has been reached in the strike- of carpenters engaged in tlie erection of State houses at Orakei. it is now feared that the strike will involve all workers employed on contract- by tin l Fletcher Construction Co. and its sub-contractors a ith the exception of apprentices, watchmen and a few hands at the Penrose tactory. A number of bricklayers and bricklayers' labourers resumed work tins morning, but there is only sufficient work to keep them employed for a few days. Roof-tilers are still working, hut there are only two roofs to be completed. The total number of men engaged ou the job at Orukei is 27-5. At the joinery factory and mill at Penrose there are 90. Sub-contractors lor plumbing. plastering, tile-laying, etc., employ 92 men. “If a settlement is not reached speedily, nobody will he at work on tile ioh after the present week." said Mr W. Fletcher principal of the contracting firm, this morning “It th,* strike had not uccorncl, :-I houses would have been completed in a month from ihe date the- strike commenced. ’ *
