PAHIATUA GOLF CLUB. CH AMPI ONSH IP QUALIFY IXG ROUNDS. (Notes by “Divot"'). During the week-end the first qualifying round for the club championships was held and some very g«HMi scores were returned in each Division, necessitating some solid reduction iii handicaps. Some contestants were evidently disappointed with their cards and destroyed them, nevertheless they will be pleased to learn that the committee has decided to extend the number of qualifying rounds to three, the best two cards being counted. The second rcund will De played on Saturday, September 4th, and the third round on Saturday, September 11th. This extension will allow those players who would have otherwise missed a round to have an opportunity to qualify. The following were the best gross scores returned : Senior: J. G. Swainson 78, J. Richardson 79, A.. D. Donald 81. Intermediate: P. R. Boagev 84, N. Judd 84, T. B. Douds 86. Junior: L. Donald 91, A. Mills 94, R. J. Gregory 97. It is rather interestinor to note that T. E. Douds, who only commenced playing golf a few months ago, has reduced his handicap 16 strokes. Congratulations **Ted,’ > the low-handi-cappers will have to watch you very closely’ next season. L. Donald is also showing good results. The club has experienced a. loss ,in the person of G. T. (Peter) Deighton, who has left on transfer to the Bank of New South AVales, Invercargill. A good golfer with a great smile! We wish him g«xxl luck in the south, with many 4 ‘birdies. ’ * Jack Richardson has been playing some very nice golf of late and always upholds his position as No. 1 in the club s "A’’ team. LLe and the veteran J. G. Swainson are goin<r to make the senior championship a hard tussle this year. A. D. Donald has been scoring well lately and is in the running for the senior as is also S. K. Siddells if he would only be content with “birdies” instead of 4 ‘eagles. 39

Four rounds have been completed for the Byrne Cup and several players are running neck to neck. No names are being disclosed until after the next round is over, lt might be mentioned though that Tom Harvey, the present holder, is again making a good bid for it> and is playing well. So is Alf Morgan! Players are advised t-o note that their respective divisions in the Day Uap and club four-ball events are to be"completed l>eiore August 30, which leaves only next week-end to play’ the remaining games. 1 he following reductions have been made in handicaps: P.
