Sir.—l notice that your corre.voiident 1 ‘Puzzled” is still puzzlvd its to the probable pay-out of our local butter dairy companies in comparison with, outside companies. L have before me the balance-sheet of several Manawatu butter manufacturing companies for the past season, also tb© balance-sheet of the Konini <*ompany, (the only local butter balancesheet available so far). Alanaivatu companies, also United (YYoodvillel. have paid from 13£d to 14£d 9 and Konini will pay Is O^d —in other words the supplier who supplied say Awahuri or Levin with 20,00<>lbs but-ter-fat will receive £145 15s 2d more than if he had supplied Konini. or if he had supplied United £f>2 8s rid more than Konini. It has been recognised over a period of years that outside companies have paid anything from Id to Id more than local companies and this season the gap seems to have widened. With the loss of outside competition is it to continue to widen? The comparatively low price paid for butter-fat for the manufacture of butter in this district (the chee»e people seem to keep their end up all right) is a question which should bo considered by tho Commission on their next visit to Pahiatua and I have no doubt would result in ail improvement of the unfair position in which dairy farmers manufacturing butter are placed at the present time.—-I am. etc., “BUTTER.” Pahiatua, 24th August 1937.
