RANFURLY SHIELD.

RETAINED BY OTAGO. LAST MATCH OF SEASON. Electric Telegraph—Press Association DUNEDIN, Last Night. By defeating West Coast yesterday by the overwhelming margin of 30—O in the final challenge of the season, Otago now hold the Ranfiuly Shield for another year. A crowd of 24,000 rushed the field at the conclusion of the match, enthusiastic scenes bringing a memorable season to a close. Coast were quite outclassed, specially in the second spell when Otago scored 19 points besides being on the attack practically throughout. The first half was chiefly a hard forward struggle, the Coast pack electing to keep the ball tight, but the visitors tired rapidly in the second spell, when the blue backs threw the ball about lr< _!y. The Otago forwards got. the ball with monotonous regularity liom the scrums and they play great football, Hare. Vorrath, and Green being outstanding in a, brilliant pack. The backs linked up well, five of the six tries coming at the end of beautiful passing rushes. Black and Watt oA the wings showed remarkable pace and determination, the former scoring four tries and the latter one. Watt’s score came after he ran half the length c-f the field, outpacing the opposition all the way. Black scored twice nearly from halfway, beating Gilbert badly every time. The Coast forwards played a spoiling game but could not "stand the hot pace set in the second spell. The hacks were unimpressive and they lacked cohesion. Gilbert kicked well, but his tackling was very weak Otago led 11—0 at half-time. Black scoring twice, Watt once and Trevathan converted one try. The second spell was opened at a, fast pace, Trevanthan potting a magnificent goal 10 minutes, after the start. Black scored twice more after brilliant runs, Trevatlian converting the second, and Simon got a try after working the blind side of the scrum. Taylor, the full-back, potted a beautiful goal. Trevathan’s total of eight points yesterday brought his total,, for the season to- 204. CANTERBURY BEAT WELLINGTON. MANCHESTER’S LAST GAME. CHRISTCHURCH, Last Night. In a game which produced little football of inter-provincial standard, Canterbury beat Wellington yesterday by 19 points to 17. The home team ran into the lead early, but the "Wellington forwards proved dangerous in the loose and they almost succeeded in evening the score. The Wellington tackling was not sound and this sometimes made the Canterbury inside backs seem better than they were. Generally, however, the backs were more effecas an attacking unit than Wellington.

Manchester, playing his last game •ot Rugby, ied the Canterbury forwards well Fraser Smith and Leahy made* many fine efforts for the Wellington forwards and Tindill and Upchurch were the best of the visitors’ backs.
