INTER-ZONE FINALS.

GERMANY AND AUSTRALIA EVEN. United Press Assn.—By Electric Telegraph—Copvrigbt. LONDON. Julv 18. Play in the inter-zone final for ihe Davis Cup between Australia aud Germany commenced to-day. Following are the results:— SINGLES. G. von Clramiu (Germany) defeated A. K. Quist (Australia).’ 4-—6. b t, I—6. 6 —4, 11—9. J. 11. Crawford < A . k .ited H. Henkel (Germany), —2 6—2. Henkel retired owing to indis|H»>ition. Quist went down fighting in sl marathon match against the German, champion. Quist fell heavily in the first game and damaged his ankle, despite which he disputed the lead right to the end. A fierce wind made conditions unpleasant and tested the skill ol both players, and it- was not surprising that bad errois wore sandwiched between glorious strokes. Quist took an attractive first >ct after 20 minutes’ piay. He dropped the* second set. finding von Gramm's service harder to handle (the German. taking five games, in a row). He won the third, dropped the fourth and then gave von Crauiuii i great battle in the filth, the German finally prevailing at 11—9. In the ninth and tenth game** Quist held off five match points aiul later another four. Quist at 8 7 had three match points; but lost the lot. Hie match lasted two hours and a half. Quist’s heroic efforts astonished every* one and both players received an ovation. Henke! was weak following his chill and his decision, to play was deferred a s iat<‘ as possible. Crawfnd, in the cirounstances, was always the master ol his opjHHient. who played an athletic game, lacking his usual determination. His service was less fierv than ordinarily. Herr Kleinschroth. the German manager, confirmed the fact that Henkel did not intend to finish his match with Crawford, as he realised he could not last the full distance.
