ACCLIMATISATION SOCIETY.

BEST TROUTjSTREAM. MAKUIII MOST FAVOURED. A meeting of the Pahiatua subcommittee or the Wellington Acclimatisation Society was held in the office of Matthews Bros., Mr A. J. Morgan presiding. Others present were Messrs W. A. Darley, P. J. Matthews, W. Beales, R. H. Taylor, J. McCormick and the secretary (Mr G. L. Stafford;. Mr Beales enquired whether the liberation of fry m the lower reaches of the Makuri River had made any appreciable improvement in the river. Mr Taylor said that according to reports from settlers a large number of small fish had been seen recently. Mr Beales said he thought the Makuri was one of the best streams for stocking in the district, and said he thought it should be the policy of the Society to stock up this stream. A letter was received from the Wellington Society asking which streams in the district would be most suitable for the purpose of concentrating on fry stocking, and also these streams not. requiring immediate attention. The chairman said he thought it was going to be the policy of the Society to concentrate on one or two streams only and let the others multiply naturally. Or Beales : “Could anyone definitely state which river carried the largest number of fish.’’ The chairman considered this a hard thing to answer but thought it would be the Mangatainoka. Other members agreed witb the chairman, and Mr Beales then suggested that members should each rear a few fry to yearlings. Mr Stafford said he thought a good idea would be to close a river for a year or so. He thought it might be a good idea to concentrate on the Makuri. Air Beales moved that they concentrate on the Makuri and Mangatainoka, while Mr Taylor suggested the Makakahi. Mr McCormick said he though the Mangahao deserved consideration. The chairman said the Mangahao looked alright but the floods did too much damage. Mr Beales said the Mangahao had icceived a lot of attention in stocking and had been very disappointing. Alter much discussion, it was decided that the Makuri was the best stream for stocking of fry.
