Despite cables from Tokio hinting that Japan though resenting Australia's tariff action, is nevertheless prepared to resume trade negotiations, Sir Henry Gullett, Minister in charge of Trade Treaties, said tonight that he had no idea when to expect an official communication from Japan. He expressed the hope on behalf of the Government that the Japanese Government would reply within a few days as to whether it is prepared to re-open negotiations on the present basis or after the sus-. pension of the- discriminatory tradeaction.
