The Pahiatua Herald PUBLISHED EVERY EVENING FRIDAY, JUNE 19, 1936. THE ITALIAN CONQUEST.

Yesterday it was announced that Mussotlini had made certain ambassadorial changes, one of which is the head of the diplomatic post at Washington to which he had appointed Signor Suvich. As pointed out the changes are likely to bring to a head a very open question involving the recognition of Italy's conquest of Abyssinia, for under the seal of appointment each ambassador will be charged to represent Victor Emanuel, King of Italy and Emperor of Abyssinia, the king having assumed the latter title by reason of his armed conquest of the country. With Haile Selassie light off the map, and, despite the latter’s assertions to the contrary, the majority of the country is under Italy’s thumb, and it will not concern Italy much if she comes in for a, diplomatic snubbing as a result. As far as the natives are concerned they will doubtless be prepared to recognise the new ruler, since Selassie himself gained his throne by the strength of armed might and subtle plotting which deposed his cousin Lij Yasu. The coming League assembly is apparently Selassie’s one big hope, and when the Abyssinian question comes before it he doubtless expects Italy to be relieved of her new territory. The chances of this are very remote for if the nations intended interfering with Italy they were more likely to do so at the early stages of the affair, and now Italy will obviously adopt a “what I have T will hold’’ attitude. Should pressure be put on her as an outcome of the Assembly meeting there is a decided possibility that it will cause a division in Europe, the upshot of which will be the ranging of the powers oil two sides, thus further complica.tmg the international situation and putting the peace of the world further in the background.
