PROTRACTED NEGOTIATIONS.
BRINGING MATTERS TO A HEAD. ULTIMATUM TO TRUSTEES. The Mayor reported at last night’s meeting of the Pahiatua Borough Council that ho had visited Wellington and interviewed one of the trustees of the Balfour and Stevens Estate, but had been unable to obtain any satisfaction in nis endeavour to purchase a section of land for use as a water works reserve. Although it had been intimated that the trustees were favourable to a reduction, they were adamant) in their views on certain conditions imposed. After a lengthy discussion on the legal aspect o.f the situation as outlined in the correspondence tabled, it was agreed to make a final offer of £25 for the property in question (for which £IOO had been asked) and failing acceptance of this, the Council will force the issue through the provisions of the Public Works Act, which permits the Council to take the property under forced sale.
