PAHIATUA COUNCILLORS MEET.

LAST NIGHT’S BUSINESS. The monthly meeting of the Pahiatua Borough Council was held last night, there being present, the Mayor (Mr J. D. Wilson) and Crs. S. K. Siddells, W. A. Carthew A. X). Donald, T. W. Watts, J. W. Sturt on F. Britland, W. T. Brown W. H. Murch. ► : L. Beavis, who is pushing a model boat from Auckland to Wellington in an endeavour to raise funds for a religious body, asked the Council’s permission to play a guitar in the streets, and on the recommendation of Cr. Murphy the request was acceded to. The Shell Oil Company and Messrs Wright, Stephenson and Co. forwarded quotations for the supply of bitumen at ll£d per gallon, and that of the Shell Company was accepted. The Department of Labour wrote to the Finance Committee setting out the conditions under which the Council may employ labourers. His Worship the Mayor pointed out that at the present time the overseer and teamster were on a weekly salary but that Mr J. H. Wilson, the gardener and sexton, was employed on day labour and would therefore come within the award. The following motion, moved by the Mayor and seconded by Cr. Carthew, was subsequently carried: “That a recommendation be forwarded to the Cemetery Committee suggesting that Mr J. H. Wilson be employed by the Council at a weekly wage of £4 lOs to work as a general labourer and gardener and sexton and that his services may be called upon at any time by the Council.” URBAN FARM LANDS. The Town Clerk reported that application had been made to the Valuer-General for the special subsidy provided by section 2<> of the Finance Act, 1935. on rates levied for the' cui rent financial year by the Council on lands used exclusively or principally for agricultural, horticultural or pastoral purposes, the amount of such subsidy claimed being £2l Os 6cl. Also, that application had been made to the ValuerGeneral for a special subsidy (if any) on all urban farmj lands in the Borough which are not included in the Urban Farms Land Roll. GENERAL. The plans being approved, the Council granted a builder’s permit for the erection of a dwelling in Huia Street or Mrs Chapman. Mrs Beech’s application for the installation of a septic tank was approved. It/if as decided to purchase a low lug arm for the Council’s Masmower, subject to a trial. Cr. Siddells reported that several trees had been blown down in the Recreation Ground and Cr. Brown thought it might be possible to utilise them for providing posts in the swimming baths fence. The recreation ground committee was empowered to have the fallen trees removed, and reserve sufficient for use at the swimming baths. Cr. Sturton asked that the footpath in the vicinity of Dr. Watson’s new residence be attended to, and the matter was referred to tfie works com lr it tee*. At Cr. Siddells’ behest the overseer was instructed to attend to a hole in the street in the vicinity of Mr Fairweather’s premises. The finance* committee was deputed to go into several quotations for mblie risk insurance policies, and furnish a report to the next meeting of the Council. Cr. Brown referred to the need for the erection of a new fence at the swimming baths, and the matter was left in the hands of the baths committee to complete negotiations with the* Oddfellows’ Lodge for the undertaking. WORKS COMMITTEE REPORT. The committee inspected the Bor«ugh grills mower and found it in a d working condition. The teamster who works the machine also states that the machine is in good ndition. The agent of the MasseyHarris quotes the sum of £lO for an •e xtra arm for close cutting. Water has been laid to the Cotestate i roperty on the contribution of £1 from the* estate. Mr Rick's application to have a footpath tarred will be subject for report at the* next meeting of the Council. O’VERSHi:R S REPORT. The overseer reported as under: Four fire plugs in Tiraumea Road have been raised. Paths have been cleaned in Tvndall, Albert, King, George, Sedcole, Princess and Arthur Streets. Five c hains of tarring has been done on the east side of Wakeman Street. Tyndall Street has been tarred from Wakeman Street to Edward Street on east side. Cfueen Street has been tarred on thee south side from Alain Street to Sedcole Street. George Street has l>een tarred on the south side from Alain Street to Sedcole Street.
