ADDING TO STAFF.

APPOINTMENT OF OFFICE J UNIOR.

At a previous meeting of the finance committee the Town Clerk tabled an application for the appointment of an office junior whi» h was held over lor consideration. Mr Lovelock submitted that the appointment was necessary owing to the growth of work carried out during his occupancy over the past six years. Moreover, under the present arrangement it would be imp srible for him to devote as much time to the office as is desirable and demanded by the ratepayers anti other persons having business with the Council Further, the increased time made available would be taken advantage o: in rendering the Council a greater service in the preparation of by-laws, statistical records and in effectively carrying out the clerical work in relation to the administration of the various services rendered by the Council. For the finance committee. the Mayor said the committee is c t the opinion that assistance will be a a benefit to the Council, ratepayers and the Town Clerk and at thy* same time the committee points out that there appears to be no prospect of advancement to the appointee bv either remuneration or status. The committee recommends the ap : fitment provided the Town Clerk can find a suitable person who is lade aware of the above condition« The Mayor personally favoured the appointment as it would cnabl the clerk to devote more time to the office work, and this rien was ported by Cr. Watts. It was subsequently agreed to adopt the clerk’s suggestion ; nd, on the motion ot Ihs. Siddells and Brown, the Council decided to call applications for the position subject to a scl dule of duties laid out bv the Town Clerk.
