PAHIATUA COUNCILLORS AT WORK. TO-DAY’S MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly meeting of the Pahiartua County Council took place today when Here were present Crs. A. W. Bisset (chairman* J R. Nelson, H. R. Wfcitta. C. La>sen. F. V. Bryant. F. T. Horne. F. Fculiv. F. S. H. Bolton and C H HodginV Correspondence was received and dealt with as under:—

Mr li. W. Kebbell enquired how the Council intended financing the metalling of clay roads on future occasions.—The Clerk pointed out that the Council appeared to be shaping towards making such work a charge on the general fund as the council had abolished riding accounts. The chairman said that- when the question did come before the Council every case would lie dealt with or. its merits. The Clerk was deputed to advise the writer that as yet the matter had not come before the Council for any extensive action

Mr Arthur Hoggard requested the Council to complete metalling from Darley’s private road to the Baifour property to enable settlers to use the road in the winter.—Referred to the. overseer. who said .hat. portion of the road was as good as the rest and was negotiable at any time.—Letter received.

Mr Frank 'White drew the Council’s attention to a hole in the road near Mr Judd’s farm entrance at Pane.—Referred to the Overseer for attention.

Mr H. Henderson pointed out that last year the Council assisted, him in metalling a portion of his road and said he had given instructions to Messrs Gill and Co. to lay out 100 yards of metal at New Year time on the hope that the Council would make some compensation, for the job, which had been done much cheaper this way and would save tlie Council a considerable sum on grading and maintenance work.—The chairman was of the opinion that Mr Henderson had done the work without) the authority of the Council which could not grant any compensation. At the suggestion of Cr. Fouby a motion was passed agreeing to hold over any decision on the matter until an inspection had been made of the work done.

Messrs Power and Pagan acting for Mr W. J James, asked Council to repair the road giving access to the latter’s property in Mangahao to enable the cream lorry to cross same to pick up produce, the farmer in question at present being obliged to carry his cream, well dow n the road —The Overseer said the road bad been metalled_ at cne time, but he bad not seen it since the new owner had taken ever the property. The Overseer was instructed to make a report for the next meeting of the council.

Akitio County Council asked permission to obtain ICO to ISO cubic >ards of metal from the roadside on, the frontage of Holland's section.— The OverseeT said that five miles of the road oi. this rout*.* wc ukl not stand much heavy traffic. In reply to Cr. Whitta the clerk said the Council Would receive about £7 10* for the ir-eta.l Cr. Wliitta was of the opinion tltat 17 10s would not go far toward repftfrui£, the road Cr. Whitta then jioiiited out that it would involve some agreement as to the condition the r»>ad was in before and after the metal was carted, v. hereon Cr Lassen withdrew his motion. A motion (by tin* Chairman and seconded by Cr. Whitta) was then carried whereby the Akitio County he* advised that metal can be taken tram the pit m question, but stipulating that an assesment of the damage likely to be clone to the road prior tc the carting of tin* metal must be undertaken. Tin chairman. Or. Whitta and the Overseer were given power to negotiate with the Akitio County in the matter. The Minister of Finance suggested, to the. Council that representations might possibly be. made to the mortgagors Adjustment Commission in connection with the* allocation of income for the payment of rates to provide that the adjustment, when made, should be based on Hie \ otes accrued due up to an order period, and also that rates covering the subsequent period even if previouslv struck, should l>e included, in the current budgetary period provided ui the* Act.—Received. Public Works Department advised that the Pahiatua Valley road was declared a highway in December and as from that date it w« uld carry a £3 to £1 subsidy for approved maintenance. (Tin* length ot the road is 6 miles 10 chants, ami all but one mile (controlled by Pahiatua) is in the Eketanuna County. Public Works Department also advised that the Tutuekara Road bad been declared a main highway with a similar subsidy.—Receiv ed. councillors expressing gratification at the The Commissioner of Crown Lands notified that a section ol land occupied by Mr A. R. Ra>mussen has not keen vested in tlie Council and that arrangements bad been made with the occupier for a formal grazing tenancy. Also that tlie Council could secure supplies ot gravel from the area U required.—Received. Cr. Horne saying, “\\t are losing a lot of our tenants ” (laughter.)
